When Leaving Costs Nothing
Cancel anytime; swap a person for an AI. As the cost of leaving falls toward zero, the scarce thing becomes the bond you could have fled — and didn't.
It is easy, now, to walk away from almost anything. Cancel the subscription anytime; never reopen the shop that disappointed you. Unfollow, move to another town, change jobs more lightly than before. And at last, a person too. The one you talk to can be swapped for an AI.
The cost of leaving has fallen almost to nothing. On the whole this is an expansion of freedom, I think. Being able to leave a place you once could not leave is plainly good. But when the cost of the exit falls, something quietly rises in price. It is the bond you could have fled and didn't.
Taking as a guide what an economist half a century ago named exit and voice, this essay traces what happens when AI lowers the cost of leaving further still, and why not leaving is about to become scarce.
1Exits Went Free
Being able to cancel anytime has become the selling point of a subscription. Flexibility, which is to say the freedom to walk out whenever you like, has itself become the value of the product. The exit is sold as a feature. As switching costs fall, people swap lightly. The ease of leaving arrives before any reason to stay.
AI sits at the far end of this trend. As of September 2024, users of one conversational AI were spending more than ninety minutes a day with it, longer than the average time given to TikTok in the same period. Cumulative downloads of companion apps passed 220 million by mid-2025.1 The estimates vary, but it is clear that a considerable amount of time is already flowing into conversation with AI.
A relationship with an AI removes much of the trouble that comes with a human one. You might be hurt. You might be refused. Say it the wrong way, and the awkwardness lasts until tomorrow. Conversation with an AI carries its own kinds of dependence and discomfort, but the conversation itself can be closed at any moment, started over, or moved to another partner. So it is easy to open up. You set the distance to suit yourself.
2Exit Warns; Voice Explains
Half a century ago, the economist Albert Hirschman divided what a person can do when an organization or a relationship goes bad into two: exit and voice.2 You leave, or you stay and try to fix it. What makes his argument interesting again now is that the easier the exit is to reach, the weaker the reason to use voice. Even when you are unhappy, it is quicker to slip out quietly and look elsewhere than to put it into words and wait for the repair.
So the side that was left never learns what went wrong. Exit gives off the warning that something is off, but it does not carry the reasons. Voice carries the reasons. Yet if no one speaks, the organization, the relationship, hardens in place without knowing where to mend.
Hirschman used the example of a school. The families most alert to the quality of teaching, and who also hold the option of moving to another one, are the families who can move a child the moment they sense something is wrong. The school loses not only pupils but the very people who would have noticed the decline early and put a demand for improvement into words.
Then what holds a person in place long enough to use voice rather than leave at once? Hirschman called it loyalty. Attachment and past investment raise the cost of departure, so the first grievance does not send you away, and room opens for taking the side of repair. The cheaper the exit, the weaker that force.
But Hirschman's loyalty is not made of attachment and the cost of departure alone. He names a third component: the expectation that one's own action, or someone else's, will improve matters. Staying without that expectation is not what he calls loyalty; even the most loyalist behavior, he writes, retains an enormous dose of reasoned calculation. To stay, then, is also to have judged that the thing can still be mended. If so, what thins loyalty is not only the cheapening of the exit. Where it has become plain that speaking up moves nothing, the reasons for staying wear away first. The attachment may remain, but if repair looks hopeless, people skip voice and look toward the door.
Exit signals that something is wrong. Voice carries the reasons. And loyalty makes the time in which voice can be used.
There is a quiet, painful pattern here. The people who sense a decline in quality early, and who also have the means to move to another option, are the ones who can leave first. The problem is not that they are the better people and that those who remain lack a discerning eye. It is that the conditions which make exit possible are unevenly distributed: information to compare with, money to move with, the reserves to start again somewhere else.
If the people holding those conditions leave before they use voice, the place left behind loses even its capacity to mend itself from within. In a workplace, a town, any gathering of people, the same temptation works as exits grow cheap, because speaking up and fixing things from inside always looks less rational than leaving to find another.
In a different context from Hirschman, the decline of social capital that Putnam later described has something of the same look about it.3 Neighborhoods, associations, ties thin out, and fewer people stay and engage. Each single departure is entirely rational. But rational departures, accumulated, can reduce the number of places that voice could have mended at all.
Exit, rational for the individual, and voice, necessary for the group, do not always point the same way.
4But the Exit Is Also Freedom
There is a temptation here to make the ability to leave the villain. That is wrong. A cheap exit is also a liberation. It is precisely because leaving is cheap that people can get out of a brutal workplace, leave a closed community, escape a broken relationship. The force that compels staying, a loyalty built on the impossibility of exit, has often sat back to back with oppression.
Hirschman himself grants that exit does disciplinary work. Customers walking away quietly from what is shoddy, voting with their feet, as it were, keeps a market honest. I have written elsewhere that what matters in defending freedom is less owning something than keeping the option to exit when you need it. I do not take that back.
So the answer is not to seal the exits. Locking the door to keep people in only rewinds the liberation. The option to exit remains freedom.
The trouble lies somewhere more awkward. In a world where you can leave anything freely, no one decides for you what not to leave.
Being able to leave everything and being able to stay with something are different capacities. The age has handed us a great deal of the first. The second, more and more, we have to choose for ourselves.
5The Luxury of Not Leaving
In a world where the cost of leaving has vanished, the scarce thing is not the exit. It is the bond you could have fled and didn't.
Voice and loyalty — the labor of staying to mend, the willingness to put time into what pays back only slowly — came to people readily enough, wanted or not, in an age when leaving was expensive. Stay long in one company, one place, one relationship, and knowledge that works only there accumulates, you learn the other person's habits, a history of failures is shared, and a context that needs no explaining builds up.
This is not to romanticize the depth as a product of having had no way out. There was no value in the constraint itself. But the arrangements that made exit difficult were also half compelling an investment in what forms only over a long time. Expertise, trust, the history of a relationship. None of that automatically survives the disappearance of the constraint.
Once the exit is cheap, that depth becomes something you cannot have unless you choose it. Expertise, trust, relationships that grow only by staying long in one place. In a world where leaving has become cheap, they turn into a luxury for those who elect them.
This is a sibling of something written earlier, "The Stratification Called Choice." What grows scarce there was not being attended to by a person as such, but human time spent reading the particulars, judging, and carrying responsibility for the result. The cheaper and more accurate machines become, the dearer that time is. In the same way, the cheaper leaving becomes, the more not leaving is worth. In both, one side of the world grows cheap, and the scarcity of something human on the other side comes into view.
What is in question is probably close to dignity. Whether you can go on being treated, by someone else and by yourself, not as an instantly replaceable counterpart but as a particular one with a history.
6Which Place to Stay Inどの場所に、留まるか
So when you notice how easily you could walk away from something, consider the reverse, just once. Is this a place worth speaking up in and mending? Or a place to leave quietly? In a world where the cost of leaving has vanished, the two are easy to confuse, and things worth mending get let go lightly.
I would not give up the freedom to leave. The door can stay open. But a door being open and walking through it are not the same.
In the past, what you stayed with was decided in large part by institutions and communities. Now even that choice is being handed back to the individual. That freedom has increased also means that the reasons for staying are yours to carry.
Keep the option to exit, and use voice anyway. Know you can go if it breaks, and try mending it a little. Know the other can be swapped, and do not swap. That choice is not the loyalty of an age with no way out.
The age has widened the freedom to leave. What to remain with is yours alone to choose. The door can stay open.
