Yuishiki, and the Path to Awakening

Twenty years ago, under the bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, I was thinking about what awakening is. What catches me now is something else — why a system as precise as Yuishiki, the account of the mind as layered consciousness, almost never appears on the visible side of Buddhism. Following what the monk of Journey to the West actually went to the far end of India to fetch, I ask where the thing kept in the back had its place, and where it can be now.

1Under the Bodhi Tree

From a snowbound Mount Koya, I had been letting my mind run over the course of Buddhist history.

As I did, my mind went back to Bodh Gaya, twenty years ago. Is it already twenty years? I sat in zazen under the bodhi tree, feeling a pleasant wind. This is the place where the Buddha is said to have attained awakening. Taking on my body what must have been the same wind he felt then, I let my thoughts run. What is awakening? What is Yuishiki?

What I was thinking about there was what awakening is. When a person attains it, what is happening inside them? Twenty years on, a new question has come up. Yuishiki — a system of such precision, and the very heart of what the Buddha taught — why does it not come forward as the heart of Buddhism?

The Yuishiki treatises are in fact at the base of every school. The Hossō school of course, and Kegon, and the esoteric Buddhism of Koyasan stands on them too. Why did something this central never come out where the people could see it? As a continuation of the course I followed from Koyasan, I want to let my thoughts run over that.

To start from the beginning: Yuishiki sets out from the view that what a person takes to be the world is made by the workings of that person's mind. So first, how does a person perceive the world? The easiest place to start is the five consciousnesses at the surface.

Eye, ear, nose, tongue, body — the workings of sense at the surface, called the first five consciousnesses. If you have ever climbed Mount Takao, you will have seen the stone wheels there, each standing for one of these parts. On Takao, incidentally, mind is added to them to make the six roots.

Up to these five plus consciousness, one can call it a surface that is grasped intuitively. And from here on it is extremely interesting. In Yuishiki, beyond the five and the sixth consciousness, there are layers of the unconscious.

These are the manas and the ālaya. The manas is the mind that keeps clinging to the self, a mind that never stops moving. It moves while you sleep, and while you are not conscious of it.

And then the ālaya, ālaya-vijñāna: the layer in which all past experience is stored as seeds, the root consciousness that also gives rise to what we take to be "the world."

This ālaya gives rise to the five consciousnesses, to consciousness, and to the manas, and gives rise to what we take to be the world. Which is to say that this world is a subjective world pictured by each person; that the world — form — is empty and without substance; which connects to the teaching that form is emptiness.

THE SURFACE — GRASPED INTUITIVELY The first five consciousnesses eye · ear · nose · tongue · body The sixth consciousness BELOW — THE UNCONSCIOUS Manas the mind that keeps clinging to the self Ālaya all experience stored as seeds · the root gives rise to
Fig. 1 — The layers of mind in Yuishiki. What is at the root is what is furthest from sight.

I want to dig into Yuishiki properly on another occasion, but it is a fairly difficult idea.

And handing this theory to the people as it stands would be hard. The five one follows; consciousness too; the manas beyond them is perhaps something like the clinging mind — but the ālaya past that is simply too difficult. To sit, to analyse how the mind is, to watch its layers. This is not something to keep up day after day while tilling a field, opening a shop, supporting a family. And it would be the same for the busy people of our own time.

It was natural, then, that an easier Mahayana came to the front instead. Put your hands together before a Buddha or a bodhisattva and you are saved. Chant the name and you are reborn. The mandala can be seen; the goma fire burns in front of you. All of it is within reach that same day. For those who were asking, this was enough. To protect the daily round, to keep illness away, to pray for a family's quiet, to make offerings for the ancestors — what is needed is not a division of the mind into layers.

2What the Monk of the Journey Went to Fetch

So where did this Yuishiki come from in the first place?

The system is said to have been built by two brothers, Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, men of northern India around the fourth or fifth century. The interesting one is the younger, Vasubandhu. He first took ordination in a sectarian school, the Sarvāstivāda, and wrote the Abhidharmakośa. He was a first-rank scholar on that side, and he did not accept the Mahayana. It was his elder brother Asaṅga who talked him round. The biographies pass down a story that Asaṅga feigned illness in order to call his brother to him4. How much of it is true is not clear, but it does suggest a scholar who would not have moved for anything less.

This Yuishiki crossed to China, and came to Japan. And here one man appears whose name, at least, everyone knows.

Xuanzang — the monk Sanzō.

He is the real monk behind the one who sets out for India with the Monkey King in Journey to the West. But while the journey is well known, what he went to fetch is rarely spoken of. What Xuanzang wanted was the Yogācārabhūmi — the root treatise of Yuishiki5. In the China of that time the Mahayana and Hinayana teachings were tangled together and the translated terms did not agree. Nothing could be settled, he seems to have thought, without gathering the originals and translating them again.

And Tang China forbade leaving the country. He set out anyway, alone, at twenty-six.

In India he entered the monastery at Nālandā and studied under a monk named Śīlabhadra. When Xuanzang arrived, Śīlabhadra is said to have been a hundred and six. And Śīlabhadra, they say, had been told in a dream beforehand that a monk would come from China and that he should pass the teaching on. It is too neat, as biographies are, and there is no need to take it as it stands — but the scene itself did happen: an old monk past a hundred waiting, a foreign monk in his twenties reaching him, five years spent learning Yuishiki.

Seventeen years after leaving Chang'an, he returned at forty-five. The scriptures he brought back are said to have taken twenty-two horses, and there is even an account of a boat capsizing on a river on the way home and fifty scrolls being lost.

The work after his return is really the main thing. Xuanzang translated the Cheng weishi lun6. Vasubandhu had set Yuishiki out in thirty verses, and ten Indian masters had each written a commentary on them, so that as they stood there were ten readings. Xuanzang blended them into a single book, taking the reading of one master, Dharmapāla, as the correct one. Translating, that is, he decided what would count as right. The disciple holding the brush at the time was Kuiji, still twenty-eight. It is this Kuiji who founds the Hossō school.

Japan follows soon after. In 653 a monk named Dōshō joined an embassy to Tang China and studied Hossō directly under Xuanzang7. Under the monk of Journey to the West, a young monk from Japan was sitting. He is the first transmission to Japan. In 717 Genbō crossed, and on his return spread the teaching at Kōfuku-ji.

Fig. 2 — The route by which one treatise travelled, from northern India to Nara.

Journey to the West told the journey, but not what was fetched. What he went to the far end of India for, at the risk of his life, was that account of the mind having layers.

3It Kept Its Place in the Back奥に在り続けた

In the world of monks there is a saying: three years for Yuishiki, eight years for the Kośa2. To take the difficult Yuishiki in three years, one must give eight to the Kośa that lies beneath it. What is interesting is that this was made on the pattern of an older saying — three years for peaches and chestnuts, eight for the persimmon. One counts the years until the fruit comes; the other counts the years until one knows. That it became a proverb means a great many monks did in fact spend those years.

And the Kośa that takes the eight years was written by Vasubandhu as well, before he turned to the Mahayana. The floor and the summit came from the same hand.

Of the six schools of Nara, three remain as schools today — Hossō, Kegon and Ritsu; Sanron, Jōjitsu and Kusha all disappeared as independent schools in the medieval period. But Kusha was taken into Hossō, and remained inside Hossō's scholarship3.

When Kūkai arranged the schools of Buddhism across ten stages of mind in the Jūjūshinron, the Hossō school, which carried Yuishiki, is placed at the sixth1. It sits at the entrance to the Mahayana, and is set out as the stage that grasps the mind as a structure of consciousness laid in eight layers. The head temples of Hossō are Kōfuku-ji and Yakushi-ji; from the medieval into the early modern period Kōfuku-ji held even Hōryū-ji and Kiyomizu-dera among its branch temples, and stands at the centre of Nara Buddhism.

The manas and the ālaya spoken of above lie further back inside Yuishiki. As far as the mind being layered, reason can follow; but really to understand it will take not theory alone but sitting, and practice repeated. And that, I suppose, is what is called the inner teaching, or the path to awakening.

A path of that kind cannot be handed on in words. There must be someone who knows it, and there must be time and a place in which to train. Three years and eight. And it does not end in one generation. The next generation needs the same years, and the one after that. For it to continue meant that the place had to remain across the generations.

The temple. A place people come to put their hands together, a place to go and meet the dead, a place to go and wish a newborn well. That, I think, is what it means to be something the heart rests on. And in that same place, the work of handing that path on went on without a break. One place existed at once as a place for guiding all the people, and as a place for passing on those who know.

One place — the temple Guiding all the people hands put together · going to meet the dead wishing a newborn well Passing on those who know three years and eight · generation on generation a path that words cannot hand on
Fig. 3 — One place held both at once, and neither side was aware of the other.

The person who came to the temple to put their hands together stood in that same place without ever being aware of the monk in the back of it, keeping up a long training in pursuit of the truth.

The inner teaching was in the back not because it was hidden. Half of it is that training in it required transmission, and required that time. The other half is that because a place where people's prayers gathered went on standing, the back had somewhere to be.

And now there are some seventeen thousand temples with no resident priest, and by 2040, they say, around three in ten will be gone8. The places where people come to put their hands together are the ones growing fewer.

So where, from here, is the place in which the back can be?

4One Could Also Say It Was Opened

The internet has broken people into fragments, I wrote before. The people who stand inside one shared story have thinned out, and the form that saves all has grown harder to work.

But the same thing is also working the other way.

What once could not be reached without entering a temple can now be reached by anyone. Translations of the originals, records of lectures, the results of research — search and they come up. What was in the back has been opened while staying in the back. Someone outside the temple can learn what could once only be learned inside it. The place where the back can be is no longer only the temple.

The use of time has changed as well. Some of the years after a working life can be given to this sort of thing. Three years and eight is long, but it is not a length one cannot take out of a lifetime.

Come to think of it, twenty years ago, sitting under the bodhi tree thinking about Yuishiki, I was not a monk either. That too happened because things had already been opened, somewhat.

The place of the back is moving from the single place that was the temple to the places of each person who wants to learn. That, most likely, is what is happening.

Whether that keeps the inner teaching, though, is not yet clear. Being opened and continuing are two different things. That anyone can reach it also means that no one is held to the three years and the eight. The part about the years being needed has not changed at all.
